When people are looking to buy a house, you will often hear them say, “I want to live a neighborhood with a friendly community.” A community is built by people living in the same place or by people having similar characteristics in common. What people want is to live in a place that has a strong sense of togetherness and where people are willing to help each other and make an effort to make the place where they live better. Public relations professionals often want to accomplish this as well, as stated in the PRSA advocacy professional value, “We serve the public interest by acting as responsible advocates for those we represent. “
Civic Engagement
As a public relations team, Thrive is concerned about civic engagement, which involves promoting the quality of life in a community by pulling its resources together to make a positive difference. Thrive’s client, Youth Oasis, also engages in civic engagement through their mission, “To provide emergency shelter and necessary support services to runaway, abandoned, and homeless youth ages 10 – 25 within the Baton Rouge Area, enabling them to transition into responsible and successful citizens.” With Louisiana having the highest rate of child homelessness in the nation according to the National Center for Family Homelessness, Youth Oasis is an important part of civic engagement in Baton Rouge because they provide a service to the community and youth of Baton Rouge who are in need.
Social Responsibility
Thrive is also concerned with social responsibility which is defined by Entrepreneur Magazine as acting with concern and sensitivity and being aware of the impact of your actions on others, particularly the disadvantaged. Youth Oasis is a model of social responsibility because it provides care to youth when they are at a disadvantage. Youth Oasis is concerned and hopes to make a positive impact on those in their care. It expresses this in their mission by stating they provide support enabling the youth to transition into responsible and successful citizens. This has an impact on both the lives of the youth and the community.
Civic engagement and social responsibility are important to society because it creates the importance for people to offer resources to those who may not be able to obtain them otherwise. Youth Oasis focuses on making a community better by pulling resources together and offering it to those in need. Thrive, as a public relations team that puts importance on civic engagement and social responsibility, is determined to put our best work forward for Youth Oasis and their mission of improving the community. We hope to serve the public interest by being their advocate in their mission.
